The Catalan heart of the region, the locals embrace their food, music, art and language with fierce determination. You’ll sense this unique spirit as you walk neighborhoods where you’ll hear flamenco drifting from clubs, pop in and out of tapas bars, and join a game of boules being played in a park.
And you can’t mention Barcelona without saying the name Gaudi. Revered by Catalans as “God’s Architect,” his modernist architecture with expressions of nature is prevalent throughout the city. Must see: Park GĂĽell, Casa MilĂ , and La Sagrada FamĂlia.
For a day that captures the essence of the city, start with an early morning stroll up La Rambla, the tree-lined pedestrian street, to La Boqueria Market. Fortify yourself on regional delicacies, like slices of cured jamon, then make your way to the salty air and sea-faring heritage of the medieval dockyards and Maritime Museum in Port Vell. In the evening return to the Gothic Quarter, or Barri Gòtic, to marvel at the lit facade of towering Barcelona Cathedral, wander the maze of alleyways, and dine at a Catalan restaurant.
