The capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur is a friendly melting pot of Malay, Indian, Chinese and other people all coming together to create a city of unparalleled architecture, street food, and shopping.
There are colonial-era buildings to see, like the Sultan Abdul Samad Building and the grand Kuala Lumpur Train Station, and also ornate ancient temples like the Hindu Sri Mahamariamman Temple and the Buddhist Thean Hou Temple.
But taking the prize for most attention-grabbing is indisputably the ultra modern skyscraper, Petronas Twin Towers, rising up almost 1,500 feet and visible from anywhere in the city. The Towers boast parks and cultural and scientific centers, while at its base is the impressive KLCC Park and fountain shows.
Kuala Lumpur takes shopping to a new level. Bukit Bintang is home to high end malls like Pavilion Kuala Lumpur and Starhill Gallery, while bargain hunters should head to Jalan Pataling Street in Chinatown for haggling and street food. For more of both, visit historic Central Market, Hutong, and Alor Street.
But amidst all this energy and commerce tranquility can be found in unique green spaces. Eco Park is a jungle in the city center. There are also the peaceful Botanical Gardens, the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park, and Kuala Lumpur Butterfly Park.
And thirty minutes north of Kuala Lumpur are the Batu Caves, 400-million year old chambers under limestone hills. Pigeons, mischievous macaque monkeys, and the towering golden effigy of the Hindu deity, Lord Murugan, will greet you before you climb 272 steps to the cave entrance. Inside the ceiling floats 300 feet above while Hindu shrines and temples dot the cave floor.
