Perched on the Iberian peninsula and built on seven hills, Lisbon is the place to go for golden sunshine and rich egg tarts, blue waters and gleaming tiles, rattling trams and passionate music.
The city’s spirit is tied to the sea which can always be glimpsed as you move through its neighborhoods. Stand at the water’s edge of the Tagus River and take in sweeping views which includes two famous bridges: the Ponte Vasco de Gama, spanning a record 11 miles, and Ponte 25 de April, a sister suspension bridge to San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge. See the medieval Torre de Belem, the dramatic Monument of the Discoveries, and the magnificent plaza, Praça do Comércio, gateway to the city.
Then survey the the pastel buildings and red roofs of Lisbon from the 11th century Castelo de São Jorge, built by the Moors. It was the Moors who brought the art of azulejo, or tile-making to the area. At the Museu Nacional do Azulejo you can travel through five centuries of tile making in Portugal, and at Palace Fronteira see some of the most grand examples.
A 1755 earthquake followed by tsunami and fires devastated much of Lisbon, but thankfully, the ancient district of Alfama survived as a tantalizing example of the Lisbon before: small streets lined with cafes and favored by artists, historic buildings like Se Cathedral, and birthplace of the throbbing Fado music still sang in heartrending performances in Fado clubs.
But the heart of Lisbon is not just laid bare in its music. You’ll find it beating all around you. Book one of our Lisbon photographers then come to eat pastel de nata at Pastéis de Belém, ride Tram 28 throughout the historic city, and gaze out to sea like a Potuguese explorer of old!
