If you’re looking for a destination that feels like you’ve slipped inside a magic lantern look no further than the alleyways, gardens, and markets of Marrakesh in central Morocco.
Pass through Bab Agnaou Gate, one of the city’s nineteen historic gates, and into the fortified walls of the medina, a medieval fortress founded in 1062. See the impressive Bahia Palace and its gardens, the 12th century Koutoubia Mosque with its towering minaret, and the historic Jewish Quarter and Cemetery. Lose yourself in the energetic labyrinth of the markets, or souks, saturated in splintered sunlight and bursting with spices, pottery, meats, sweets, lanterns and leather.
Outside the souks is Jemaa el-Fna, a huge central square, filled with horse-drawn carts, jugglers, snake charmers, acrobats, fortune tellers and musicians. During the day take it in from a rooftop bar with a cup of mint tea; at night, wander with locals amongst the rows of covered food stalls and street vendors.
Venture outside the walls of the medina for the red ruins of 16th century El Badi Palace, the botanic gardens of Jardin Majorelle, and the breathtaking pillars and mosaics of the Saadian Tombs. Venture further afield on an epic day trip to the Atlas Mountains and a traditional Berber village.
When you’re ready to retreat from the heat and dust of the day, head to your own private garden in the form of a riad, or traditional Moroccan house with an interior garden or courtyard that serves as a hotel or guest house.
Whether you’re drawn by the smell of tagines under clay lids, the call to prayer from the minarets, or the swaying snake charmers in the square, book one of our Marrakesh photographers and immerse yourself in this colorful, vibrant city of thousand sensory experiences.
