Martha's Vineyard is the perfect New England retreat, an island just south of Cape Cod that can only be reached by water or air and where your cares will be carried away on the ocean breeze.
The island has been a summer escape since the late 19th century and it is easy to understand why, with its sandy beaches, quaint fishing villages, and wildlife refuges. But it was also home to sea captains and farmers, and continues to be called home by many today, including talented restaurateurs, local artists, and even alpaca breeders!
If you arrive by ferry, you’ll dock at Vineyard Haven, the island’s ferry port, and one of the island’s six towns, each with its own charms. Visit Oak Bluffs to stroll past the pretty Gothic cottages looking more like colorful gingerbread houses and take a spin on the iconic Flying Horse Carousel. Go to Edgartown for whaling history, shopping, and seafood dining. And head to Aquinnah to see Gay Head lighthouse, just one of the island’s five distinct lighthouses.
There are two informal regions to Martha’s Vineyard, only 21 miles long, the populated “down-island” along the east coast and the more rural “up-island” going out to the southwest. In the center of the island is Manuel F. Correllus State Park, perfect for biking, walking and golfing.
Martha’s Vineyard feeds the inner child of every visitor, regardless of their age. Children can play with alpacas and fly kites, families camp and kayak, and couples enjoy the spectacular sunsets and unexpected nightlife. Book one of our local photographers, catch a plane or hop on a boat, and start your idyllic island retreat!
