New York, America’s “Big Apple,” is an iconic city of landmarks and cultures.

When most visitors talk about New York they’re generally referring to Manhattan, the dense, heart of New York and home to Broadway, Central Park, the Empire State Building and Time Square. But New York is made up of five fabulous boroughs: The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island.

If you’re a first-time visitor, definitely hit the lights and avenues of Manhattan. Visit the must-see sights, but look for the unexpected as well: the Whispering Gallery in Grand Central Station; a 12 x 20 foot piece of the Berlin Wall in Midtown Plaza; the catacombs beneath St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral; or lindy hop dance clubs in Harlem, birthplace of Swing dancing in the 1920s.

And whether a first-timer or a return visitor, get out of Manhattan! Staten Island Ferry is free and runs 24-hours a day, offering a picture-postcard view of the New York skyline and Lady Liberty. Head to the southernmost borough for an urban zoo, breweries, and roller skating. Walk the Brooklyn Bridge then stroll streets of iconic brownstone buildings and the Brooklyn Flea for vintage clothing. Catch the A Train (made famous by Duke Ellington) all the way to Queens!

And New York is a world class destination year round. There’s the 257 year-old St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Fifth Avenue in spring, free summer Shakespeare and concerts in Central Park, fall games at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, and Christmas lights in Brooklyn’s Dyker Heights neighborhood.
