A place to steep yourself in early American history or just breathe in the ocean’s salty air, Virginia Beach sits along the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean.

Following the edge of the coastal city from South to North is a great way to discover its many charms, from the restaurants and marinas of Rudee Inlet in the Oceanfront District to an entertaining 3-mile beach-lined boardwalk to First Landing State Park, where the Jamestown colonists from England arrived in this area in 1607.

There are a number of brick 17th and 18th century houses to tour, such as the Adam Thoroughgood House and Francis Land House, as well as the 18th century Cape Henry Lighthouse still standing and shining from Fort Story. It offers stunning views atop its 191 steps and nearby you’ll find the First Landing cross landmark.

Others may prefer to seek out the 34-feet tall bronze statue of Neptune, greeting locals and visitors alike from his spot on the oceanfront Boardwalk. From there they can venture to Grommet Island Park, the fishing pier, the Norwegian Lady statue, or one of the many nearby museums.

The natural wonders of the area deserve special attention as well, consisting of oceanfront, marshes, and maritime forests, and inviting activities from surfing and kayaking to hiking and canoeing. Visitors can learn more about the area’s wildlife at the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center and Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum.
